Video Production Process
The process of producing a video from initial concept to the final product,
is one that must be carefully considered and executed to make sure that audio
and visual content communicate the right message to the audience.
The diagram to the right shows a typical video design process and demonstrates how many
different elements must work together.
Pre-production planning
- Aims and objectives are clearly defined.
- The needs of the programme are clearly specified.
- An interpretation of the content and style is written.
- Production formats selected (including picture dimensions of 4:3 or 16:9).
- A detailed budget is produced.
Development
- The treatment and content is developed following more detailed research.
- A script is written through close collaboration with the subject matter expert.
- A shot list describing the shot sequences is produced if necessary.
Production
- A professional, experienced crew use broadcast quality equipment to obtain
the required video footage.
Post-production
- A draft edit (or ‘roughcut’) is produced, incorporating a guide voice-over,
graphics, animations, titles and music.
- The roughcut is viewed by the client and, when any amendments have been made,
a professional voice-over is recorded which replaces the guide voice-over.
- Upon approval, the final ‘master edit’ is carried out. At this stage, the
sound levels are accurately balanced, tones adjusted and pictures graded.
- A Digital Master is produced.
Duplication
- The programme is copied onto the chosen format, ready for distribution.
